Members of the Fairfield Police Officers Association are bolstering the budget of the Matt Garcia Youth Center/Police Activities League by more than $100,000

The donation comes during tough economic times and with the looming specter of budget cuts.

Members of the Fairfield POA will be on hand Tuesday at the Fairfield City Council meeting to present two ceremonial checks symbolizing the success of the association’s two fundraising events last year that raised $111,679.

The association’s biggest success was from its third annual fundraising dinner held in August at Jelly Belly. More than 150 attendees paid $50 for the event, which featured tri-tip and chicken donated by City Councilman John Mraz and Budweiser donated the beer and other beverages served at the dinner. Association members coordinated and publicized the event and drummed up donations from many local businesses to help make the dinner a success. The event raised more than $96,000 for the Garcia Center and the Police Activities League, according to the association’s president, Brian Pereira.

The second fundraiser was the association’s inaugural Koch-Cisneros Shooting Competition held in October. The two-day shooting competition pitted nearly 100 law enforcement officials or members of the military in outscoring each other at the Police Department’s shooting range.

The event, which raised $15,000, was named for two local law enforcement officials who died in the line of duty. Fairfield Police Sgt. Art Koch was ambushed and killed in July 1984. Solano County Deputy Sheriff Jose Cisneros was shot and killed in August 1985.

Shooters came from as far away as Santa Barbara to compete in the event, which was won by Keith Garcia, a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer. The BART officer’s shooting was perfect.
