FAIRFIELD - 4-13-13- Fairfield Police Officer Amanda Graham had a close call Thursday shortly before midnight. She made a routing traffic stop on North Texas Street for a car that had an alleged equipment violation.
The two people in the car, the driver, Jessica Pantoja, and her companion, Edgar Torres, both 26, sat in the car while Graham asked them questions. Graham saw that Torres was acting nervously and he was evasive about giving Graham his name, according to a press release.
As Graham stood alongside the car, Torres allegedly reached for a loaded handgun that he had hidden in his waistband, police report. He threw open the car door, allegedly striking Graham, who got into a brief struggle with the man.
Torres was arrested, handcuffed and relieved of the gun that police discovered had been stolen in Davis.
Pantoja was searched and police found she was in possession of a suspected controlled substance, so she joined Torres in being taken to the Solano County jail.
Police discovered that Torres was a parolee on the lam. He was booked into the jail for an alleged parole violation and on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a loaded gun, possessing stolen property and transporting a controlled substance. Pantoja was booked into the jail on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance.
In 2005, Torres, then 18, received a seven-year prison sentence for a gang-relating shooting in Vacaville, according to court records. The shooting occurred when Torres was 17 years old. While the case was pending, he and a friend escaped from the juvenile hall and fled to Mexico, where he hid out until he returned to California.
Authorities found Torres hiding out at his parents’ home in Suisun City.
