FAIRFIELD - Veteran Fairfield police officer Andy Carter didn't hesitate to rush into a burning Meadowlark Drive home Thursday.

Using a fire extinguisher from his car Carter attacked a noontime kitchen fire that had spread to the ceiling of the home. Before entering the home Carter made sure a teenage baby-sitter and the young child she was caring for when the fire erupted were safe and out of harm's way.

Carter arrived at the fire before firefighters and his quick thinking saved the home from serious fire damage, Lt. Robert Bunting said.

Firefighters arrived a short time later, three minutes after the fire was reported, and quickly dowsed what was left of the stove fire.
