Eleven police staffers were honored Thursday and residents of a neighborhood recognized at an awards ceremony sponsored by the Fairfield Police Department. Honorees and community members gathered in the Fairfield City Council Chamber for the event.

One of the most notable awards was the Medal of Valor, presented to veteran Officer Randy Augusto and his canine partner Greck. Last year, Augusto saw a suspect pull a gun and shoot at a vehicle occupied by a woman and her two children. The officer chased the suspect and deployed Greck, and later fought the suspect until he could take him into custody, police said. The shooting was apparently a random, not targeted, act of violence, officials said.

Staff awards included:

• Robert Wilkie, Police Officer of the Year for 2007

• David James, Employee of the Year for 2007

• Lt. Darrin Moody, Manager of the Year for 2007

• Kristina Leslie, Top Mic of the Year for 2007

• Pat Horn, Volunteer of the Year for 2007

• Stefanie Myers, Cadet of the Year for 2007

• Corporal Mel Ferro, Officer of the Quarter

Recognized were:

• Kathryn Scarrott, promoted to corporal

• Troy Oviatt, promoted to corporal

Residents of the Shell Court neighborhood snagged citizen commendations.
